1. In one sentence, what is Break the Grey?
A. Break the Grey exists to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ with families facing pediatric cancer and other life-threatening illnesses through service, support, and encouragement.
2. What does Break the Grey actually do? What are its plans for the future?
A. The mission of Break the Grey is currently accomplished by throwing a party (at the hospital) and handing out “bundles” of age-appropriate toys/gifts to the patients and siblings as well as gift baskets to the parents. We are continuing to seek God’s will for the future and go in the direction in which He guides us. However, we hope to conduct fundraisers for research for pediatric cancer, host other events such as VBS or other parties, and strive to meet material and financial needs of families facing childhood cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. In the meantime we do a lot of other little things such as getting in touch with individual families and helping to meet their individual needs or by providing them with specific services or resources upon their request.
3. How do I know this is a credible project?
A. Break the Grey has received local and national recognition, with articles in the New Albany Tribune and The Courier-Journal, as well as a spot on WHAS 11 News on January 27, 2006. The Association of Christian Schools International also recognized Break the Grey as an Exemplary School Program for the 2006-2007 school year.
4. How was Break the Grey started?
A. Break the Grey initially began as the dream of a student named Sarah Boesing. Sarah spent a lot of time on the combined kidney/cancer unit at her local children’s hospital as she was born with a terminal kidney disease. God provided a cure for her when she was given 6 months to live by way of a kidney transplant. After her transplant she felt like God gave her a huge heart for children with cancer. With God leading her, Sarah developed Break the Grey to give back to a place that had given her so much. Her drive for meeting these families’ needs where they are and providing encouragement and support for the day-to-day struggles was fueled even more when she was diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency, an incurable antibody disease.
